How to Line Up a Beard
A line up gives a beard sharp, deliberate edges. Our senior barbers in Chesham explain how to set each line, which tools to use and how to avoid taking too much off.
What Is a Beard Line Up?
A beard line up, sometimes called an edge up or shape up, is the process of creating clean, defined edges around the beard. It covers the cheek line, the neckline, the moustache edge and the point where the sideburn meets the haircut. The length of the beard stays the same. What changes is the frame around it.
A good line up can make a beard look fuller, sharper and more intentional in a matter of minutes. It is one of the most popular finishes at Broadway Barbers in Chesham, where our trim and razor shape up is a regular booking for customers who want crisp edges that last. Knowing how to line up a beard at home helps you keep those edges looking fresh between visits.
Which Lines Make Up a Beard Line Up?
Runs from the top of the sideburn to the corner of the moustache. It sets how high the beard sits on the face.
The lower edge of the beard, curving from two fingers above the Adam's apple back to the ear lobes.
The line along the top lip. It should be clear of the lip without looking shaved back.
Where the beard joins the haircut at the temple. A clean connection ties the whole look together.
How Do You Line Up a Beard Step by Step?
You will need a trimmer or a detail trimmer with a T blade, a fine comb, a hand mirror and a razor if you want a very sharp finish. Always line up a beard that has already been trimmed to length.
- 1Comb the beard into place
Comb the hair in its natural direction so you can see exactly where the edges fall. Lines set against the grain end up in the wrong place.
- 2Find your natural cheek line
Look at where the dense growth on your cheek ends. The best line usually sits just above this point rather than cutting into the full growth.
- 3Draw the cheek line
Using the corner of a trimmer with no guard, draw a line from the top of the sideburn toward the corner of the moustache. Make it slightly curved or straight to suit your face.
- 4Clear above the line
Remove the stray hairs above the line with the trimmer. Use short, light strokes and stretch the skin with your free hand.
- 5Mirror the other side
Repeat on the other cheek, checking constantly that both lines start and end at the same height.
- 6Set the neckline
Use the two finger rule above the Adam's apple and curve the line back to each ear lobe. Clear everything below it.
- 7Edge the moustache
Comb the moustache down and trim along the top lip with scissors or a detail trimmer, keeping the mouth relaxed.
- 8Sharpen with a razor
For a barber style finish, apply a clear shaving gel and use a razor along the outside of each line. Rinse and apply a soothing balm.
What Tools Give the Sharpest Line Up?
The tool you choose makes a real difference to how crisp your line up looks and how long it lasts.
| Tool | Sharpness | Skill Level | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard beard trimmer | Good | Beginner | Neckline and general edges |
| T blade detail trimmer | Very good | Intermediate | Cheek line and sideburns |
| Safety razor | Excellent | Intermediate | Final finish on cheek and neck |
| Straight razor | Excellent | Advanced | Barber finish only |
| Foil shaver | Good | Beginner | Sensitive skin on the neck |
Clear shaving gel is worth using for razor work because you can see the line through it. Foaming creams hide the edge and make it easy to take off more than intended.

How Long Does a Beard Line Up Last?
The sharper the line, the sooner regrowth shows. A razor finish looks the cleanest but starts to soften within a few days. The chart below compares how long each finish usually stays crisp.
Most men keep their line up fresh by running a detail trimmer along the edges every three to four days. It takes less than two minutes and stops stray hairs from building up.

What Mistakes Should You Avoid When Lining Up a Beard?
| Mistake | Result | How to Avoid It |
|---|---|---|
| Cheek line too low | Beard looks thin | Clear only the strays above the natural line |
| Uneven cheek lines | Face looks lopsided | Mark both start and end points first |
| Neckline too high | Double chin effect | Use the two finger rule |
| Pressing too hard | Nicks and irritation | Use light strokes and stretch the skin |
| Lining up every day | Lines creep further in | Stick to every three to four days |
The neckline deserves special attention because it is the easiest line to push too high. Our full guide on How to Trim a Beard Neckline explains exactly where it should sit and how to fix one that has crept up.
Should You Choose a Sharp or Natural Line Up?
A sharp line up suits short boxed beards, faded beards and anyone who wants a very groomed look. A natural line up, where only obvious strays are removed, suits longer beards and men who prefer a softer, less maintained style. If your beard is lighter in colour, a sharp line can look harsh, so a slightly softer edge often works better.
Skin tone and hair colour matter too. On darker, denser beards a crisp line up creates strong contrast and looks very clean. On fair or ginger beards, the line is less visible, so a slightly lower and softer edge often gives a more natural result. Men with curly beard hair should take extra care with razor work on the neck, as closely shaved curly hair is more likely to grow back into the skin and cause bumps. A trimmer finish is usually the safer option in that case.
Your line up should also connect with your haircut. If you wear a skin fade, a clean sideburn joint and crisp cheek line look natural together. If your hair is longer at the sides, a softer connection avoids a harsh step between the haircut and the beard.
A line up works best alongside a well planned outline. Read our guide on How to Shape a Beard to plan the shape, learn How to Fade a Beard to blend the sideburns and use How to Trim a Beard Neckline to perfect the lower edge.
When Should a Barber Line Up Your Beard?
A barber line up is worth booking when you are setting lines for the first time, when your edges have drifted after several home trims or before an event where you want a razor sharp finish. A barber can see both sides clearly and will set symmetrical lines that suit your face shape and growth pattern.
At Broadway Barbers, senior barbers Dan, Harry, Ann and Catherine carry out beard line ups every day. Each barber has their own Booksy profile so you can choose who you see and book ahead. We are open seven days a week, with late opening until 8pm on Thursdays.
