How to Use Beard Oil
Beard oil only works well when it is applied properly. Our senior barbers in Chesham explain how much to use, when to apply it and the technique that gets it where it matters.
Why Does the Way You Apply Beard Oil Matter?
Many men buy a good beard oil, put a few drops on the surface of their beard and wonder why it makes little difference. The problem is usually technique. Beard oil does its most important work on the skin under the beard. If it only coats the outer hairs, the skin stays dry, the itch continues and the oil sits on top looking greasy.
Learning how to use beard oil properly takes less than a minute a day and makes a noticeable difference to how your beard looks and feels. At Broadway Barbers in Chesham we finish many beard trims with a little oil and often show customers the right technique. This guide covers the same method, along with how much to use and when.
Getting the routine right also makes a bottle last longer. Using the correct amount in the right place means less waste and better results from every drop.
What Do You Need Before Applying Beard Oil?
Oil works best on a freshly washed or rinsed beard, free from sweat, food and old product.
Pat the beard dry so it is slightly damp rather than dripping wet.
Choose an oil suited to your skin. Lighter oils suit oily skin and richer oils suit dry skin.
A boar bristle brush for short to medium beards or a wide tooth comb for longer beards.
How Do You Use Beard Oil Step by Step?
- 1Wash or rinse your beard
Use a gentle beard wash two or three times a week. On other days, rinse with warm water to open the pores and refresh the hair.
- 2Pat dry
Press a towel against the beard. Avoid rubbing, which creates frizz and pulls on the hair.
- 3Measure your drops
Put the right number of drops into your palm based on your beard length. Start small as you can always add more.
- 4Warm the oil
Rub your palms together for a few seconds to warm the oil and spread it across your hands and fingers.
- 5Work into the skin
Use your fingertips to massage the oil into the skin under the beard. Start at the cheeks, then the jaw, chin and neck.
- 6Coat the hair
Run your palms down through the beard from roots to tips so every hair is lightly coated.
- 7Include the moustache
Use any oil left on your fingers to smooth the moustache, pressing it gently downward.
- 8Brush into shape
Brush or comb through to distribute the oil evenly and set the direction of the hair.
How Much Beard Oil Should You Use?
The right amount depends on your beard length and skin type. Too little and the skin stays dry. Too much and the beard looks greasy. The table below is a good starting point.
| Beard Length | Drops Per Use | How Often | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stubble (under 6mm) | 2 to 3 | Daily | Focus on the skin |
| Short (6 to 25mm) | 3 to 5 | Daily | Massage in well before brushing |
| Medium (25 to 75mm) | 5 to 8 | Daily | Coat the hair evenly |
| Long (75mm plus) | 8 to 12 | Daily | Apply in two stages |
| Very dry skin | Add 1 to 2 | Up to twice daily | Evening top up helps |
If your beard looks shiny or feels heavy an hour after applying, reduce by one or two drops next time. If your skin still feels tight or itchy, increase slightly.
Our barbers can show you how to apply oil at the end of your trim. A beard trim at Broadway Barbers starts from £8, with a trim and razor shape up for £20. Open seven days a week in Chesham.
When Is the Best Time to Use Beard Oil?
Timing affects how well the oil absorbs. The chart below shows how effective oil tends to be at different points in the day, based on how open the pores are and how clean the beard is.
The morning after a shower is ideal for most men. The warm water softens the hair and opens the pores, so the oil absorbs quickly and the beard looks good all day.

What Mistakes Do People Make With Beard Oil?
| Mistake | Result | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Oiling only the surface | Dry skin and itch continue | Massage into the skin first |
| Using too much | Greasy, flat beard | Start with fewer drops |
| Applying to a dirty beard | Traps dirt and oil | Apply after washing or rinsing |
| Dripping straight onto the beard | Uneven coverage | Warm in your palms first |
| Skipping the brush | Patchy distribution | Brush through after applying |

Should You Use Beard Oil With Other Products?
Oil pairs well with beard balm for medium and long beards. Apply oil first to condition the skin, then add a small amount of balm for hold and extra softness. For very short beards, oil alone is usually enough. If you use a leave in conditioner, apply it before the oil so the oil can seal in moisture.
Avoid layering too many products at once. Start simple with a gentle wash and oil, then add balm only if your beard needs more control.

How Should You Use Beard Oil on a New or Short Beard?
Short beards and stubble need oil just as much as longer beards, perhaps more. When facial hair is only a few millimetres long, the sharp cut ends press against the skin and cause itching. The skin is also more exposed to wind, cold and central heating. Two or three drops massaged directly into the skin each day makes a big difference to comfort during the first few weeks of growth.
On very short beards, focus almost entirely on the skin rather than the hair. Use your fingertips in small circular motions and cover every area, including the neck just above the neckline. There is no need to brush afterwards unless your beard is longer than about 6mm. As the beard grows, gradually increase the amount and start brushing to spread the oil through the length.
If you are growing a beard for the first time, start oiling around the end of the first week. Beginning early helps prevent the itch phase from becoming uncomfortable enough to make you reach for the razor.
